Router Vs Jigsaw - What's The Difference?

As a beginner who is probably looking for some powerful tools that can make it easier to work on a workbench, the issue of router vs jigsaw is definitely an important one.

The choice between router and jigsaw should depend on the type of project or cut you are handling, hence both tools have their characteristic usefulness.

The main features of the router:

While the jigsaw is used as a free-hand tool, the router must be used with an appropriate jig, except if you want to handle edge work.

Basically, a router is just a hand tool that can be used to hollow out a region on a hard surface material such as wood or plastic. The main features of a router are:

  • a broad base or bottom
  • narrow blade
  • the base plate

The new electrically-driven router has an electric motor.

The main features of the jigsaw:

A typical jigsaw can be used as a free-hand tool.

It will help you cut out circles and arcs with the finest precision. Aside from using the jigsaw to cut out arcs and circles, you can attach a router to its base. A typical jigsaw comprises three basic components, which are:

  • a mounting shaped base plate.
  • a pivot bar that has holes
  • a connector bar that connects two different parts with the aid of a sliding joint.

The jigsaw is primarily designed and manufactured from thick, quality plywood.

Router Vs Jigsaw - The Differences

A jigsaw is more versatile when compared to a router. While the router can be used to handle simpler jobs such as trimming of laminates, a jigsaw must be attached to the router for more complex and difficult jobs such as the recessing of door hinges or recessing of face-plates of locks.

If you are looking to do quick work and will be fine with results that aren't particularly smooth or accurate, a jigsaw will be a better option. You can add your router to smoothen or clean up a job already handled with a jigsaw.

Experts in woodworking agree though with the fact that both tools are very important and have their uses.
